Can anybody sing?

I was the bandleader at Gabe’s in Nashville and a guy who wanted to sit in with us came up and asked me, “Can anybody sing?”

I said, “Well, I can’t.”

  1. This reminds me of when I was working, in the gravel pit. I’d be walking around singing and someone would come up to me and ask Can you sing “Far, Far Away”? Or they’d say: I can’t sing either. Or some stupid thing like that.
I would just continue singing. Made a boring job a little less boring. My favorite thing to sing was the Charley Pride at Panther Hall album. Song, talk, even hum the steel intros and breaks. Man I loved that LP!

  2. Or sing tenor? Ten or twelve miles away?
Yeah, man, that Panther Hall record was something else. I’ve always wondered what Gene O’Neal who was Charlie’s steel player at the time, thought about them bring Lloyd in for that gig.
    Thanks for the comment.

  3. Cal, was Gene the steel man for Charley already then? (1968)
Thing is though, they did use Lloyd on all of Charley’s records at the time did they not?

I LOVED Gene’s playing for sure, but I am so glad they brought used Lloyd on the Panther Hall one.

Another “by the way” ..clear this up for me: I Saw Charley Pride in Norway in 1972. He did some shows there with Gene. Talked with Gene too by the way. I asked Charley about the PH album and he said they did it in 1967. The majority says it was 1968. Who is right?
